812,198. Detecting leaks in pipes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 17, 1957 [Sept. 18. 1956], No. 28560/56. Class 99(2). To test a heat exchanger for leaks, the ends of the tubes 3 in one header 1 are blocked by an inflatable rubber tube 4, and a probe 13 is connected to the other end of each tube in the header 2 in succession, the probe 13 being connected to a vacuum source through a gas flow meter which, by measuring the flow of gas through the probe, indicates the presence of a leak in a tube. The probe 13 comprises a rubber tube carried by a perforated brass cylinder and incorporating a cup 14 for fitting over the tube ends, the tube being expanded by the application of pressure to the interior through pipe 15 and vacuum to the exterior through pipes 11, 19, to enable the probe to be sealed to one tube 3 only. Pressure and vacuum connections 9, 7 and 8, similarly cause expansion of tube 4 to seal the upper ends of tubes 3. A pipe 17 from the cup 14 leads through a seal 18 to the gas flow meter and vacuum pump, the meter being of the type comprising a heated tube with platinum resistance thermometers at each end connected in an electrical bridge network, gas flow through the tube producing an out-of-balance signal on the bridge galvanometer.
