[Also in Group XXVIII] A device for detecting leaks at a gas-sealed point such as a gland in a liquidcontaining system such as a heat-exchange circuit, comprises two chambers 22, 24 separated by a membrane 20 made of a material susceptible to attack by the liquid, the chamber 22 communicat. ing with the sealing gas space around the joint &c. and the chamber 24 with an indicating instrument. As shown, the membrane is clamped between cylinders 10, 12 by a union nut 18. The cylinder 12 is welded into a box 28 provided with pipe connections 30, 32 whereby a stream of fluid may be passed through the chamber 24 to an indicator. Liquid leaking at the gland will fall on to the membrane, perforate it and pass through to the chamber 24 and be carried away. Where the liquid in the system is sodium, the membrane is made of wire woven compressed asbestos fibre, such as Klingerit (Registered Trade Mark), the sodium reacting with air in the chamber 24 to form a smoke of oxide. An orifice 36 in a partition 34 restricts the passage of.gas and prevents a drop in gas pressure if the membrane fails or is being replaced; in Fig. 2 (not shown), the partition is replaced by a sintered steel disc allowing the liquid to pass but preventing rapid escape of gas.
