Abstract

1425887 Treatment chambers LA CALHENE 1 June 1973 [5 June 1972] 26239/73 Heading A5R An airtight chamber for surgical operations comprises an inner chamber 13 for receiving a body part 18, an outer chamber 2 of flexible air-impervious material, a garment 6 and gloves 9, 11, recessed into the outer chamber for covering an operator external to the outer chamber 2 and providing access to the inner chamber 13, the inner chamber 13 comprising an annular collar 19 bearing a band 20 for gripping and thus isolating the body part 18 from the ambient atmosphere, one side of an operative field, in the form of an adhesive covered sheet 26, being adhered to the inside of the inner chamber 13, the other side of the operative held having a removable covering 28 and an inlet 22 for inflating the inner chamber 13 being provided. The inner chamber 13 may be sealed in the wall of the outer chamber 2 by welding, slide fasteners or adhesive tape or sealed on a ring 14 sealed around an orifice in the outer chamber 2. The operator has airtight access to the interior of the inner chamber through gloves 9, 24 so that he may remove the covering 28 and, thereafter, through the gloves 9 and inner chamber wall, apply the operative field to the body part and make an incision through the inner chamber wall, the operative field and the skin of the patient. Eyelets (32, 33) Figs. 4a, 4b (not shown), for receiving rigid bars, may be provided on the inner chamber wall for holding it flat during application of the operative field. The inner chamber wall may have removable rods to prevent collapse of the chamber 13 against the body part 18 as the operative field is applied.
