Abstract

925,339. Making upholstery. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Feb. 28, 1962 [April 7, 1961], No. 7789/62. Class 52 (4). In the production of cushioned articles using vacuum forming techniques, an assembly comprising a cushion base 41, a resilient core 42 and a fabric cover 43 is placed on a table 13, the base and/or the cover having a peripheral, adhesive coating, the fabric periphery is releasably attached to gripping means 16, a flexible diaphragm 21 is moved over the assembly to abut the table 13 and the space between the table 13 and the diaphragm 21 is evacuated thereby to draw the diaphragm 21 and cover 43 around the core and base, the cover 43 being released from the gripping means and bonded to the peripheral area of the base. The table 13 is provided with a raised platform 15 and a flange 17 which is sealingly engaged by a frame member 19 carrying the diaphragm 21 when the latter is lowered by a motor-driven rack 24 and pinion 27 prior to evacuation of air through conduits 53, 37 by a pump 36. The grippers 16 may comprise inextensible anchored strips 50 carrying hooks 52 engaging apertures in the edge 44a of the cover 43, which hooks tear through the cover to release it at a predetermined moment. Spring-loaded clasps may be used as an alternative to the hooks. Alternatively (Fig. 6, not shown), the gripper may comprise a sheet of inextensible material having hooks around the periphery of a central opening therein having the shape of but being larger than the cushioned article to be formed. Heating means 30 comprising banks of infra-red lamps 31 is provided. Specification 914,870 and U.S.A. Specification 2,918,442 are referred to.
