Abstract

910,391. Laminates and laminating. STANLEY WORKS. Feb. 8, 1960 [Feb. 17, 1959; Jan. 29, 1960], No. 4328/60. Class 140. [Also in Group XVII] A package (Fig. 1) comprises a base sheet 10 of uncoated, vat-dyed, porous paperboard, an article 12 disposed on the base sheet and a covering 14 of transparent thermoplastic film overlying the article and the base sheet and in laminar contact with the base sheet. The thermoplastic film is an unoriented extruded polyethylene or polypropylene film which has been surface treated or oxidized by heat or irradiation for heat sealing to the base sheet. The base is provided with score lines 16 to prevent curling of the package due to shrinkage of the film. The articles 12 are placed on a paperboard substrate on a perforated metal tray 20 which is transferred to the platform 24 of elevator 26. Thermoplastic film 14 from a roll 32 extends between frames 34 and 36 which are situated below an I.R. heater 38 and cooling fan 40. The film is heated and the platform 24 bearing the tray 20 is moved into the frame 34, air pressure being applied through the line 30 to distend the film and prevent wrinkling. Suction is then applied through the line 28 to draw the film into laminar contact with the substrate 10, the heat activated surface of the film being drawn into the pores of the paperboard. Cooling is then applied by the fan 40 and the substrate is disengaged from the tray 20 by a blast of air through line 30. The assembly is then severed from the film and cut into individual packages.
