Abstract

1286026 Trays; shrink-wrapping B F GOODRICH CO 28 April 1970 [28 April 1969] 20280/70 Headings B8C and B8P A tray 14 formed from a rectangular blank (12, Fig. 1) includes a discontinuous strip of adhesive 16 along its side walls. The strip 16 is produced by depositing two continuous strips of adhesive, either in liquid form or as preformed strips, along the edges of a continuous length of foldable material from which the tray blanks (12) are cut or along the side edges of the blank (12) per se. The adhesive used is a thermoplastic adhesive such as polyethylene. To form a package (10, Figs. 4 and 7) of bales of rubber utilizing the tray 14, a tubular shroud (34, Figs. 4 and 7) of heat-shrinkable material, closed at its upper end, is placed over a stack of bales (8, Figs. 4 and 7) on the tray 14 to enclose the bales 8 and the side walls 24, 26 of the tray 14, the lower end of the shroud is bonded to the adhesive strip 16 and then the shroud is heated to shrink it into tight engagement with the bales of rubber. Air is able to escape or may be withdrawn by a vacuum pump from within the shroud (34) through channels 30 formed between the non- bonded portions of the side walls 24 and the shroud. The shroud may be a film of polyethylene, polypropylene or polyvinylchloride. The heat-shrinking of the shroud is effected by lowering a hot air heating ring (36, Fig. 5) around the package or by passing the package through a heating tunnel or by directing a hot air gun at the package. One side (38, Fig. 5) of the heating ring (36) is adjustable to accommodate rectangular packages of various sizes.
