Abstract

969,584. Packaging. W. R. GRACE & CO. July 20, 1962 [July 24, 1961], No. 28068/62. Heading B8C. Articles are wrapped in heat shrinkable film by folding the film round them with an overlap and extending free portions, and heat shrinking by a stream of hot air, the free portions and the film as a whole with consequent sealing together of overlapped portions. Groups of articles such as fruit may be placed on film 22 supported on a rectangular frame 21, pressed into the frame and the film folded round them. Heat is applied causing the protruding tubular ends to coalesce and the overlay to seal where stretched over the articles during shrinkage, apertures being left at either end which permit ventilation. Cans on a single cylindrical article may be similarly wrapped. Articles such as lettuces may be bunch wrapped by the method, Fig. 7. Suitable films are produced by irradiating and biaxially orientating polyethylene of average molecular weight 20,000. Other materials such as polyvinyl compounds, polypropylene polyesters, polyethylene tetraphthalate may be used. The irradiating methods described in Specifications 866,819 and 866,820 may be employed.
