Abstract

1,092,966. Surgical suction apparatus. H. W. ANDERSEN PRODUCTS Inc. May 13, 1966 [Oct. 22, 1965], No. 21487/66. Heading A5R. Suction apparatus for draining the chest cavity comprises a bottle 10 communicating by a tube 22 with a catheter (not shown) and by a tube 14 with a vacuum pump 16 and includes control means for determining the lowest pressure obtainable in the container comprising a receptacle 34 of liquid within the bottle and a control tube 32 opening at one end below the surface of the liquid in the receptacle and at the other end to atmosphere, the control tube being adjustable to varying depths in the liquid to vary the pressure head of liquid which must be overcome on evacuating the bottle before atmospheric air enters by way of the control tube 32 and the liquid. The pump 16 is resiliently mounted on the lid 42 of the bottle, which is held in place by a threaded ring 46. A sleeve 30, which slidably and airtightly receives the control tube 32, the tube 14, and a connector 26 between rigid and flexible portions 22b, 22a of the tube 22, are made greater in diameter than the holes which receive them in the lid 42 so that, after being compressed for insertion, they expand to make airtight connection with the lid. The receptacle 34 is a flexible bag with straps 38 which are secured by a resilient ring 40 on the sleeve 30. A water seal 23 in the bottle prevents air from flowing back to the catheter if the vacuum is lost.
