Abstract

The invention comprises an improvement in or modification of the process for the preparation of 5a -hydroxy-6b -fluoro or 9a -fluoro-11b -hydroxy steroid compounds claimed in the parent Specification which comprises first introducing anhydrous HF into dimethylformamide at an elevated temperature, cooling the reagent thus formed to below 10 DEG C. and then reacting it with a 5a ,6a -epoxy or 9b ,11b -epoxy steroid so as thus to form the desired 5a -hydroxy-6b -fluoro or 9a -fluoro-11b -hydroxy steroid compound, and a process for the preparation of the reagent claimed in the parent Specification by introducing anhydrous HF into dimethylformamide at elevated temperature, e.g. 40 DEG -60 DEG C.
