Abstract

The invention comprises 9a -fluoro-3b ,11b ,17b -trihydroxy - 5a - androstane, 9a - fluoro - 3b , 17b - diacetoxy - 11b - hydroxy - 5a - androstane, the 3,20-bis-ethylene ketal of 6b -fluoro-5a ,17a -dihydroxy-pregnane-3,11,20-trione and a process for the preparation thereof in which 9b ,11b -epoxy - 3b , 17b - dihydroxy - 5a - androstane, 9b , 11b - epoxy - 3b , 17b - diacetoxy - 5a - androstane and the 3,20-bis-ethylene ketal of 5a , 6a - epoxy - 17a - hydroxy - pregnane - 3, 11, 20-trione are treated with a reagent comprising a solution of anhydrous hydrofluoric acid in dimethylformamide at a temperature not above 10 DEG C., so as thus to form the desired 9a -fluoro-11b - hydroxy - androstane or 5a - hydroxy - 6b -fluoro-pregnane compound. Suitably equal volumes of anhydrous HF and dimethyl formamide are employed.
