Abstract

2,6-Dihydroxy-benzoic acid is prepared by reacting an alkali metal salt of resorcinol with carbon dioxide at a temperature of at least 130 DEG C. in a solvent of formula R.CO.NR12, where R is hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R1 is an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The dihydroxy acid may be separated from the reaction mixture, which also contains 2,4-acid, by fractional crystallization after acidification or may be alkylated or alkenylated and the alkyl 2,6-alkoxybenzoate or alkenyl 2,6-alkenyloxybenzoate separated. Such ester may be mildly hydrolysed with alkali to hydrolyse the 2,4-ester, which is removed, and the residue subjected to more vigorous hydrolysis with alkali and acidified to obtain the 2,6-dialkoxybenzoic acid or 2,6-dialkenyloxybenzoic acid. Examples are given.
