Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound storable stably for a long time, and useful as a raw material for various organic syntheses, easily, with simple operation, by treating an organic halogen compound first with a reducing agent and then under basic conditions.
CONSTITUTION: An organic halogen compound such as 3,4-dibromopentanoic acid ethyl ester, 1,2-dichlorocyclopentane, etc., is stabilized by treating with a stoichiometric amount of a reducing agent (e.g. sodium thiosulfate, hydrosulfite, etc.), and then adding a base (e.g. hydroxide, carbonate, etc. of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal) until the reaction mixture becomes basic. Free halogens, by-produced acids, and other volatile components can be effectively removed by this treatment, and the stabilized organic halogen compound thus obtained can be stored for a long time without producing these contaminants.
