916,273. Converting rotary to oscillating motion. PELHAM, R. H. Nov. 8, 1961 [Nov. 30, 1960; Jan. 9, 1961], Nos. 41198/60 and 870/61. Class 80 (1). In mechanism for converting rotary motion into oscillating motion, two wheels of different diameters rotate about eccentric pivots, the first wheel driving the second wheel which is rotatably mounted on a lever to which the oscillatory motion is imparted. Apparatus for producing a periodic movement of one frequency modulated at a lower frequency comprises a wheel 11 rotated about an eccentric pivot 12 by a motor 13 and reduction gearing 14. The wheel 11 drives a second wheel 15 through a U-belt 16, the wheel 15 being pivoted eccentrically at 17 on a lever 18 which imparts the oscillating motion to a puppet through an elastic cord 23. The lever 18 is fulcrumed at 19 and loaded by a spring 22 to maintain belt tension. In a modification, eccentrically-mounted shrouded tooth wheels or friction wheels are used in place of the belt-driven wheels.
