915,808. Nuclear reactor control rods. DE HAVILLAND ENGINE CO. Ltd. May 24, 1960 [July 9, 1959], No. 23680/59. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXV] A neutron-absorbing rod 11 of boron carbide can be moved into or out of a reactor core or can be dropped into the core to shut down the reactor. The rod, which cannot rotate, is moved by rotation of a screwed tube 14 itself rotated by a splined shaft 15. Tube 14 is held up by a ball lock including balls 21 which can be released by lifting the shaft 15; the shaft is urged upwards by a spring 25 but is normally held down by current flowing in a winding of an electric motor which also rotates a shaft 17 to move the control rod.
