Abstract
786,486. Screw-and-nut gearing. UNITED KINGDON ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 9, 1955 [May 11, 1954], No. 13669/54. Class 80 (3). [Also in Groups XXXV and XL (a)] Screw - and - nut mechanism, particularly adapted for controlling the position of a fissile element 10 in a nuclear reactor core 11, comprises a nut member 17 which is attached by tubular part 18 to a tube 15 working in a guide 16 and supporting the element 10 by a rod 12 on an arm 14 secured to tube 15. Co-operating with the nut 17 by a ball-bearing thread such as described in Specification 707,017 is a hollow screw member 19 which has a relatively rotatable head 21 thereon. This screw member is adapted to be rotated through a slidable splined connection by a shaft 23 driven through a magnetic clutch 24. In Fig. 1, the nut 17 is in its lowest position against a stop 30, corresponding to the fully withdrawn position of the reactor element 10, and the screw 19 is screwed down into the nut. On rotating the screw in one direction it is screwed out of nut 17 until it engages with its head 21 a stop constituted by a magnet 26, Fig. 2, the clutch 24 allowing the drive to slip. The nut is still left in its lower position, but if the drive of shaft 23 is reversed it is raised by the screw until it also engages the magnet 26, Fig. 3, which position corresponds to the full insertion of the element 10. By again reversing the drive the nut is screwed down. The arrangement provides an emergency control to withdraw the element 10 quickly by de-energization of the magnet 26 which allows the nut to fall with the screw from any position it may be in on to the stop 30.
