Abstract
862,324. Linear actuators. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Dec. 1, 1958 [Jan. 20, 1958], No. 1848/58. Class 78 (3). [Also in Groups XXXV and XL (a)] A linear actuator for moving a control-rod in a nuclear reactor (see Group XL (a)) comprises concentric tubes 10, 11 and a threaded rod 25 moving the outer tube 10 through a ball nut 27. The outer tube moves on ball castors in a tube 14 passing through the reactor wall, which tube carries toothed racks coupled to racks on the tube 11 by pinions 15, so that tube 11 moves twice as fast as tube 10. The rod 25 is driven by a hollow electric motor having a high-speed part 45 and a synchronous part 48. A flexible coupling 50 and a magnetic brake 56 are provided.
