Abstract

915,360. Water - tube steam boilers. VORKAUF, H. July 7, 1961 [Sept. 21, 1960], No. 24604/61. Addition to 889,994. Class 123 (2). The water-tube boiler described in the parent Specification is modified in that the convection heated U-shaped tube coils proceed from and return to the tubes which shield the tube coils from radiation from the combustion chamber. As shown, the boiler consists of a tubular framework for supporting the heating surfaces consisting of downcomer tubes 1, return tubes 2, longitudinal and transverse distributing headers 4 and 5, 5<SP>1</SP> and collecting headers 6 and 7, 71. The steam drum 8 is supported on the downcomer tubes 1. The heating surface tubes 9 at the front wall and roof, the tubes 10 at the side walls and the tubes 11, 11<SP>1</SP> at the rear wall enclose a combustion chamber 12 downstream of which is a flue 13 in which is disposed further evaporator surfaces 14 and economizers 15. According to the invention the heating surfaces 14 consist of vertical platens of nested U-tubes, the tubes of each platen branching from and returning to one of the rear wall tubes 11<SP>1</SP>, these tubes which may carry a layer 26 of refractory material shielding the platens from furnace radiation. In a modification, Fig. 2, (not shown), the platens 14 are interdigitated with similar platens connected to tubes lining the rear wall of the pass 13. In a further modification, Figs. 3 to 5, (not shown), the rear passi s divided into upper and lower horizontal passes, the platens being located in the former. In further modifications the shielding tubes form the floor of a lateral pass, Figs. 6 and 7, (not shown), or screen an up-pass from the combustion chamber, Fig. 8, (not shown), in which the platens are located.
