(c1. 122-37) The invention relates to locomotiveshavin high pressure water tube boilersand low pressure smoke tube boilers, the purpose of which is to provide a mounting of the high pressure boiler drum and a connection between this drum and the low pressure boiler in an especially-advantageous manner. The invention consists in mounting the front end of the high pressure drum, the rear end of which is mounted on the firebox wall, in a cylindrical shell fixed on the smoke tube boiler. In this manner, even with a comparatively short smoke tube boiler, a rigid connection between the smoke tube boiler and the high pressure boiler is obtained and the great. ,15 rigidity of the drum is used to increase the'longidrum does not extend the full length-of this shell but terminates far enough short ofthe tube wall to -leave a space between the front wall of the high pressure boiler and the fire box tube wall of thesmoke tube boiler, such space being provided with an opening in its upper side to permit access thereto. yIn this way the front manhole of the boiler drum remains accessible, a feature which is especially important when the high pressure water tube boiler is constructed as an indirectly heatedboiler, so that there are present in the boiler drum heating pipes through which the heating steam flows. r
In a'modified formrof, the invention, the shell in which the high pressure drum is. mounted, extends through the upper 'part of the'loiw pressure boiler and ends in the smoke'cha'mber. The high pressure boiler drum can then extend nearly to the smoke-chamber so that the front manhole of the drum is-ea'sily accessible through the smoke chamber In both forms of the invention, in order to provide-a further connection between the low pressureboiler and the high pressure drum and for generally js tren'gthening the construction, side sheetw'alls are applied which are secured to the fire box tube wall of the -low pressure boiler and In the drawings, two .iorms oi the invention are shown by way of example.

In the drawings, '1 is the drum of the high pressure boiler and 2 the low pressure smoke tube boiler; For the high pressure boiler there are provided awa'ter tube fire box and additional heating tubes which define the heating 'flue leading from. the'fire box 'to the "smoke tube boiler. It is unimportant for the purposes of the present invention whether the steam generation in the high ,pressure boiler is .producedby indirect or direct heating of the water contents of the boiler drum. In the locomotive shown in the drawings, the boiler drum is indirectly heated by a circulating heating medium. The construction of such a boiler is well .known and need not .-be described. It should, however, be noted that the heating steam is conducted to the heating elements '3 in the drum 1 from intermediate headers land 5 to which the externally heated tubes for the heating steam are connected. I
The rear end of the high pressure drum 1 is slidably mounted'iin a cylindricalshell 6 which is fixed on 'the'rear Wall '8 of the fire box by means I of a'fianged ring?" On the-front endof the drum 1,.in the form shown in Figs. '1 tee, a cylindrical shell 10 is fitted which is fixed by a flanged ring 12 on the fire box tube wal11'3 of the smoke tube boiler 2. The boiler druml extends into the shell 10 only .sov 'far that between itsrront wall and the tube wall {13 .a.-free,space remains which is accessible through an opening .14 in the top of the shell. The tube wall 13 0f the smoke tube boiler is stifiened on the (inside by braces 16 (Figs. 3 and 4-) fixed on the boiler .jacket 15. On the outside of the tube wall 13 sheet walls 18 are mounted. .These sheet walls may be stiffened by angle irons. These sheet walls .which closethe sides of the heating fi-ue leading from the fire box to the smoke tube. boiler *(Fig. :2) are rigidly connected at their upper edges to the jacket of the high pressure ,drum 1. At their 'lower 'edges they carry slide bars 19 by which they are slidingly supported on the longitudinal frame 2c of the locomotive. The intermediate headers 5 are suspended from the sheet walls 18 together with the heated tubes 21 leading into them. The heated tubes can expand freely by reason of this suspension and shocks to which the frame is exposed are not transmitted directly to these tubes. In the heating fiue leading to the smoke tube boiler, superheaters 22 are arranged in the space between the.
tubes 21.
In the form shown in Fig. 5, the shell 24 in Which the front end of thehigh pressure drum is mounted is not fixed on the outside of the fire box tube wall 13 of the smoke tube boiler, but ex tends through the steam space of the smoke tube boiler and ends in the smoke chamber 25. The corresponding openings of the fire box tube wall 13 and of the smoke chamber tubewall 26 are provided with flanged rings 27, 28 to which the tube 24 is riveted. The front end of the boiler drum 1 nearest the smoke chamber carries a flanged ring 30 which is clamped in the tube 24 or riveted or threadedly mounted in it. In this way the drum 1 is rigidly connected with the smoke tube boiler. Near the fire box tube wall 13 the drum 1 carries a ring 31 which is mounted with a little play in the shell 24. But it would also be possible to arrange at this place the rigid connection between the drum 1 and the shell 24 and to mount the front end of the drum 1 nearest the smoke chamber slidably in the shell 24. The portion of the drum 1 which lies inside the smoke tube boiler purposely is not filled with heating tubes, but serves as a collecting space in which the impurities of the feed water, which preferably is taken from the smoke tube boiler, can settle out.
While I have described the shells as being cylindrical, it is quite obvious that they are so shaped only to fit the shape of the high pressure boiler drum and that other shapes of shells to fit other shapes of boiler drums would fall within the scope of the invention} The term shell as used in the claims is therefore intended to cover supporting extensions of any shape which substantially surround the high pressure boiler so that it is prevented from twisting in any direction from its normal longitudinal axis.
While I have described herein some embodiments of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not intend to limit myself thereby 'except within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a locomotive having a longitudinal frame, a high pressure water tube boiler, a low pressure smoke tube boiler, and a fire box,the rear end of said high pressure boiler being mounted on the rear wall of said fire box, and a shell secured to one vertical wall of said smoke tube boiler, the front end of said high pressure boiler extending into said shell.
2. In a locomotive having a longitudinal frame, a high pressure water tube boiler, a low pressure smoke tube boiler, and a fire box, the rear end of said high pressure boiler being mounted on the rear'wall of said fire box, and a shell secured to the outside of the fire box tube wall of the smoke tube boiler, the front end of said high pressure boiler'extending into said shell but terminating short of the said fire box tube wall so as to leave a space within said shell. i 3. In a locomotive having a longitudinal frame, a high pressure water tube boiler, a low pressure smoke tube boiler, and a fire box, the rear end of said high pressure boiler being mounted on the rear wall of said fire box, and a shell secured to the outside of the fire box tube wall of the smoke tube boiler, the front end of said high pressure boiler extending into said shell but terminating short of the said fire box tube wall so as to leave a space within said shell, said shell having an opening in the upper side thereof to permit access to said space.

In a locomotive having a longitudinal frame, a high pressure water tube boiler, a low pressure smoke tube boiler, and a fire box, the rear end of said high pressure boiler being mounted on the rear wall of said first box, and a shell secured to the outside of the fire box tube wall of the smoke tube boiler, the front end of said high pressure boiler extending into said shell but terminating short of the said fire box tube wall so as to leave a space within said shell, and means within said low pressure boiler to brace said fire box tube wall.
5. In a locomotive having alongitudinal frame, a high pressure water tube boiler, a low pressure smoke tube boiler, and a fire box, the rear end of said high pressure boiler being mounted on the rear wall of said fire box, a shell secured to the outside of the fire box tube wall of the smoke tube boiler,the front end of said high pressure boiler extending into said shell but terminating short of the said firebox tube wall so as to leave a space within said shell, a jacket on said high pressure boiler, and sheet walls secured to said 165 jacket and to said fire box tube wall and slidable on the frame, said sheet walls forming a flue connecting said fire box and the tubes of said smoke tube boiler. i
6. In a locomotive having a longitudinal frame, a low pressure smoke tube boiler mounted on the front portion of said frame, a fire box at the rear of said frame, water tubesin said fire box, a shell secured to one vertical Wall of said smoke tube boiler, and a high pressure boiler having its front end extending into said shell and its rear end mounted on the rear wall of said fire box, I said water tubes being connected to said high pressure boiler to generate steam therein.

In a locomotive having a longitudinal frame, a low pressure smoke tube boiler mountedon the front portion of said frame; a fire box at the rear of said frame, water tubes in said fire box, a shell secured to one verticalwall-of said smoke tube boiler, a shell mounted on the rear wall of said fire box, and a high pressure boiler having its ends extending into said shells and supported thereby, said water tubes being connected to said high pressure boiler to generate steam therein.
8. In a locomotive having a longitudinal frame, a low pressure smoke tube boiler mounted on the front portion of said frame, a fire box at the rear of said frame, water tubes in said fire box, a shell secured to one vertical wall of said. smoke tube boiler, a shell mounted on the rear wall of said fire box, and a high pressure boiler having its ends extending into said shells and supported thereby, said water tubes beingconnected to said high pressure boiler to generate steam therein, the rear end of said high pressure boiler being sliolable in said fire box wall shell.
9. In a locomotive having a longitudinal frame, a fire box, a high pressure water tube boiler, a low pressure smoke tube boiler in front of said high pressure boiler, and a smoke chamber in front of said high pressure boiler, the rear end, of said high pressure boiler being mounted on the rear wall of said fire box, a shell mounted in and extending through saidjlow pressure boiler and communicating vvithsaid smoke chamber,
11.
