914,669. Measuring electrically. WESER A.G. Dec. 4, 1959 [Dec. 4, 1958], No. 41342/59. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XIX] Thrust in a rotary shaft 2 mounted in a thrust bearing 1 on a base-plate 3 is ascertained indirectly by arranging one or more measuring devices between the plate and a supporting surface to measure the forces exerted therebetween, such forces being proportional to the thrust forces of the shaft against the bearing. As shown, two pressure-measuring cells 5, which may be hydraulic or electrical, are interposed between the plate 3 and a supporting surface 4, the respective indications given by the cells being proportional to the positive and negative axial thrust in the shaft. The cells may be let into the plate or the support. In another embodiment four cells are disposed respectively at the corners of the base-plate and this arrangement is said to allow the friction torque set up by the rotation of the shaft to be disregarded. Cells may also be provided above as well as below the base-plate. In a further embodiment the base-plate 3 is bolted directly to the surface 4 and strain gauges are applied to the fixing bolts to indicate the forces therein.
