Abstract

1,255,042. Washers. J. H. STOVER. 8 April, 1969, No. 17969/69. Heading F2H. [Also in Division G1] A force washer 10 for measuring a compressive force between two surfaces, e.g. a nut and bolt, Fig. 1 (not shown), includes flat portions 20, 20<SP>1</SP> and countersunk portions 21, 21<SP>1</SP> as shown, and at least one strain gauge 14 mounted on the cylindrical wall of the washer. Four, six or nine equally spaced strain gauges may be used connected in a bridge circuit or connected in series/parallel combinations to a measuring instrument. The strain gauges, which may be of the foil type providing self-temperature compensation are matched to the thermal expansion coefficient of the washer material. The washer may be mounted between two further washers of harder material and may be provided with a further countersink 22 for accommodating a filler or radius under a bolt head. The washer is heat hardened and the strain gauges are protected with a coating of epoxy resin or rubber. Suitable dimensions of the washers are disclosed.
