Abstract
In a method of making a shell mould (see Group XXII) by successively dipping an expandable pattern of e.g. wax or synthetic resin, into a slurry of e.g. sillimanite or aluminium silicate in a binder liquid, and then dusting the coating with solid refractory particles, the average size of the particles of the first layer is smaller than that of the last layer. This process gives a mould which has a fine inner and a coarse outer structure. The binder may be ethyl or sodium silicate, and it may be hardened with carbon dioxide or ammonia. The binder may include a high temperature binder which may contain e.g. an alkali metal fluoride or an ammonium phosphate, an alkali metal borate or tetraborate or a mixture of an alkali metal fluoride and an alkali metal borate or tetraborate or an aqueous solution of phosphoric acid or an alcoholic solution of phosphorus pentoxide. Details are described of the particle sizes of the dusting material.
