Abstract

913,660. Furnace hearths. DANIEL, A. Feb. 23, 1959 [March 13, 1958], No. 6076/59. Class 51 (2). In a method of constructing concrete hearths in furnaces of the superposed hearth type, the hearths are cast in sectors, each sector having a hearth portion disposed radially of the kiln cast in one piece with the corresponding part of the cylindrical body of the kiln and by which it is supported. A kiln 1, Fig. 1, comprises superposed concrete annulae, each of which forms a hearth and is cast in self-supporting, monolithic sectors, each sector of which has a radially extending hearth portion 4b and a portion forming the cylindrical wall 1b of the kiln, the kiln wall having an outer metal casing 2. The sectors have cavities 5a, 5b on the undersides which communicate by openings 7, 7<SP>1</SP> with holes 6, 6<SP>1</SP> in the sectors for the passage of gas, and superposed annulae are united by tongue and groove joints 8b, 9a. In a modification the sectors are formed by slabs 13, 13<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, supported by radially extending beams 10, 11, 12 which are integral with the kiln wall and which form cavities 5b, 5<SP>1</SP>b in the undersides of the sectors.
