Abstract
815,643. Furnaces. SKINNER, A. J. Nov. 8, 1955 [Aug. 9, 1954], No. 23056/54. Class 51 (1). In a furnace having a double-walled combustion chamber the space between the walls is filled with an air-permeable material and the combustion air is preheated by passage therethrough. Air for an oil burner 7, Fig. 1, is heated during its passage through vertical columns of refractory material 4 in the form of balls, broken bricks, rods, tubes, rings &c. packed between partitions 3 and the chamber walls 1, 2. In a modified furnace in which insert blocks 10, Fig. 2, form the wall 1, the refractoryfilled spaces on the inner sides of the partitions 3 are interconnected at their lower ends by a duct into which the heated air passes and through which burners extend. In a furnace of circular cross-section, the blocks 10 are arranged to form a circle. In yet another furnace, the double wall comprises layers 4a, 4b, Fig. 4, of porous brick separated by impervious cement layers 11 constituting the partitions 3. A further embodiment shows this wall construction applied to a circular cross-sectioned furnace. Fig. 6 shows a furnace with a plurality of horizontally-disposed burners 7, and in a modification of this construction the partitions 3 are made of interlocking blocks. The invention may be applied to solid fuel furnaces and the air-permeable material may include metallic materials formed or arranged to provide interstices through which air may pass.
