Abstract

[Also in Groups XXXV, XXXVI and XXXVII] A vibrator having an axially movable coil 4 in an annular air gap has, attached to the coil, a light obturator or reflector 11 so that a beam of light may be switched at the frequency of an alternating current applied either to the coil or to an energizing winding in the field magnet system. The device may be used in a spectrometer. With A.C. applied to the coil the field may comprise a permanent magnet 1 or a D.C. electromagnet; with an A.C. energized field magnet, D.C. would be applied to the coil. The coil, on a former 5, is suspended on resilient arms 6 at one or both ends, one pair of which serve as connections. A phase-sensitive switch or rectifier comprising contacts 12, 13, Fig. 4, actuated by a member 15 may also be operated by the movement of the coil.
