Abstract

783,439. Gyroscopic apparatus. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Ltd. Nov. 10, 1955 [Nov. 15, 1954], No. 33048/54. Class 97(3) [Also in Group XXXV] In apparatus comprising a' rigid body, such as a gyroscope rotor case, supported on a base in such a way as to allow the body to respond through a limited range to a torque about any axis parallel to a given plane, and an electro-mechanical force applier having a coil rigidly mounted on the rigid body and a magnet mounted on the base so that when the coil is energized the force applier exerts a force between the body and the base, means are provided for adjusting the magnet to vary the line of action of the force occurring between the coil and the magnet in order to adjust the direction of the axis of the resultant torque. The apparatus may include more than one torque applier. As shown in Fig. 1, the gyroscope rotor casing 1 is suspended as by gimbals or a ligament suspension so as to rotate freely through a small range about any axis perpendicular to the spin axis 2 of the gyroscope rotor. Brackets 3, 4, 5 and 6 are mounted symmetrically round the rotor casing, and are acted upon by a set of eight force appliers. Some of these force appliers are shown in part only, or omitted, in Fig. 1. Each force applier is similar to the moving coil arrangement commonly used in loud-speakers, and consists of a coil 12 embedded in a cylinder or cup of plastic, and a "pot" magnet 13 in the form of a cup 14 and a central post 15. Each coil lies in the annular air gap between the poles of the associated "pot magnet. The coils are connected to the brackets 3, 4, 5 and 6, and the " pot " magnets 13 are mounted on a base (not shown). Opposite pairs of coils are connected so that, when energized together, they assist each other in producing a couple about an axis perpendicular to the gyro spin axis 2. If the post 15 of the pot magnets were exactly cylindrical, the couple would lie in the median plane of the force appliers. The line of action of the force produced by any force applier is made adjustable by forming the central post 15 with a flat 16, and rotating it by means of a gear 18. The line of action of the forces of each set of torque appliers can thus be arranged to lie in the median plane of the torque appliers, so that the resulting torque lies wholly within this plane.
