965,347. Inclinometers. GENERAL PRECISION Inc. Nov. 16, 1962, No. 43478/62. Heading G1N. An inclinometer comprises a wire suspended pendulum 32, the extremity of which carries the armatures 116 of two differential transformers each consisting of two pick-up coils 118 wound on polepieces 98, 102 and 100, 104 placed on opposite sides of the pendulum axis and defining two orthogonal axes, the transformers being energized by a common coil 108 and the pairs of pick-up coils being so arranged that the magnitude and sense of a deviation of the inclinometer from the vertical controls the magnitude and phase sense of each differential transformer output. The vertical and horizontal position of the pendulum 32 within its housing 12 is adjustable by screws 66 and 86 respectively so as to position accurately the armature comprising two pairs of orthogonally positional segments of high permeability material 116 the segments of one pair being diametrically opposite each other and all mutually spaced on a disc 40 of non-magnetic material, in the two orthogonally spaced air gaps formed between four polepieces 96 energized by the coil 108 and the two pairs of polepieces 98, 102 and 100, 104. The interior of the housing 12 is filled with a damping fluid, the temperature dependent expansions and contractions of which are accommodated by a sliding piston 124 connected to a bellows 128, a spring 140 maintaining a small fluid pressure.
