Abstract

912,892. Magnetic separators. GLEASON WORKS. March 3, 1961 [June 22, 1960], No. 7857/61. Class 117. Swarf is removed from a machine tool cooling liquid by feeding the liquid into a housing 17 to flow along a semi-circular passage 37 defined by an apron 36 in the housing and the periphery of a rotary magnet-containing drum 24 whereby the swarf is attracted to the drum surface and removed therefrom by a tangentially disposed non-magnetic scraper 44 which passes the swarf to the underside of a second rotary magnet-containing drum 49 whilst allowing any liquid scraped from drum 24 to drain back into the passage 37, the drum 49 being disposed above the level of the liquid at the outlet end of the passage 37 and the swarf being finally removed therefrom by a scraper 19 to fall on to a conveyer (not shown). As shown the drum is carried by a motor-driven shaft 26 and comprises a non-magnetic stainless steel shell 31 screwed between aluminium end plates 28, 29, the shell 31 carrying circumferentially spaced pairs of ceramic poles 32 of opposite polarity which are bridged by keeper bars 33. The scraper 44 is combined with a baffle 45 which directs any liquid back towards the drum shell 31 to drain into the passage 37. The second drum 49 is smaller than drum 24, containing only two opposed pairs of poles 57, but is driven at ten times the speed of drum 24. In an alternative arrangement, the scraper 44 is replaced by an endless belt which extends around the drum 24 and a roller which is carried by a spring-loaded bracket pivotally mounted on the axis of the second drum 49, the belt serving to convey the swarf to the second drum. In this arrangement the drum 24 may be driven by the belt from the roller which is itself positively driven by a motor.
