[Also in Division F4] A portable abrading machine comprises: (a) a housing, (b) a pair of longitudinally-spaced laterallyextending drums revolvably mounted on the housing for supporting an endless abrading belt thereon, (c) a motor mounted on the housing having a laterally extending drive shaft, (d) a driving connection between the motor drive shaft and one of the drums, including drive and driven pulleys connected or adapted to be connected by an endless driving belt, (e) a pick-up chamber in the housing adjacent one of the drums capable of receiving waste, resulting from operation of the machine when vacuum is applied to the chamber, (f) a vacuum pump including a rotary impeller, driven by the motor, and (g) conduit means between the pump and the pick-up chamber located in part between the drive and driven pulleys and within the confines of the endless driving belt. A machine for sanding or polishing flat wood or metal surfaces comprises an endless abrading belt 16 trained about drums 12, 14 rotatably supported by a housing 10 having handles 26 42. The drum 14 is driven by an electric motor through a belt 40 and gears 36, 38. The housing comprises a body casting to which a cover casting 52 is secured by screw fasteners 66; a sheet metal drive belt cover 68 is secured by a screw fastener to the cover 52. Wood dust or other waste products resulting from operation of the machine can pass tangentially from the belt, as it moves about the drum 14, through a slot 80 into a pick-up chamber 82. Access to the chamber is obtained by removing a coverplate 85 secured to the housing by screw fasteners 81. The chamber is connected by a hose 120 to the inlet of a centrifugal impeller 90 mounted on the shaft of the drive motor and integral with a motor-cooling fan. The outlet of the impeller 90 is connected through a passage 99 in a cap 100, secured to the cover 52 by screw fasteners 102, and conduit 108 to a collector bag 106. The cap 100 may be replaced by a cap not having a passage when vacuum dust removal is not required. The cover-plate 85 for the pick-up chamber 82 may be replaced by a cover-plate having an outlet nozzle adapted for attachment to a hose of an external vacuum cleaning system.
