United States Patent PORTABLE POWER QPER'A'I-ED'SANDING MACHINE Arthur N. Emmons, Nedrow, N. Y., assignor to The Porter-Cable Machine Company, Swacuse, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application September 16, 1954, Serial No. 456,599 Claims. (Cl. 51-170) This invention relates to sanding machines and more particularly to sanding machines of the type wherein the abrading element consists of a pad to which there is imparted a translatory movement.
The invention has as an object a sanding machine embodying a particularly compact structural arrangement including a vacuum system for collecting the dust resulting from the sanding operation.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
in describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a sanding machine embodying my invention with a portion of the dustcollecting system broken away.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the machine.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the base portion of the machine showing one end portion of the guard skirt elevated.
Figure 4 is an enlarged side elevational view with the base portion and a portion of the pad shown in section. Figure 5 is a view taken on line 5-5, Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a top plan View of the forward end portion of the base.
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 6, with the dust collecting fan enclosure in position.
Figure 8 is a bottom plan View of the fan enclosure.
The machine consists of a base member 10 having a top wall 11 and a depending flange 12. The base '10 is rectangular in general form, and a rectangular pad 13 is mounted on the under side of thef-base. -The .pad 13 is formed of resilient material, such as rubber, and
The plate 14 is mounted to the top wall 11 of the base by four posts 18. The upper ends of the posts 18 are attached to the base by screws 19 moulded in the posts and threading into the top wall 11 of the base, see Figure 4. The plate 14 is fixed to the lower ends of the posts 18, as by screws 21 threading into metal inserts 21 moulded in the lower ends of the posts 18.
Translatory motion is imparted to the pad 13 by a crank member 22 journalled for rotation on a stud, the upper end 23 of which is fixedly mounted in the top wall 11 of the base. The plate 14 is attached to the member 22, as by a screw 24, the screw threading into the member 22 on an axis oflfset from its axis of rotation, whereby the member 22 serves as a crank member and because the movement of the pad is restricted by the posts 18, which are formed of resilient material, such as rubber, the pad is moved in a small orbit. The member 22 is provided with a circumferentially extending groove 26 to receive a drive belt 27 which is also trained about a pulley 28 mounted on the shaft 30 a motor mounted vertically in the motor housing 31.
The top wall 11 of the base is formed with four bosses 32, the outer sides of which are machined on a radius, as indicated at 34, Figure 6, to. provide shoulders 35 on which the lower end of the cylindrical motor housing 31 is positioned, see Figure 5. The bosses 32 are apertured, as at 36, to receive screws 38 extending upwardly through the top wall 11 of the base and threading into the motor housing. A fan enclosure is positioned within the bosses 32. The enclosure is formed with a discoidal portion at; and a depending cylindricalfiflange 41. The top discoidal portion 40 is apertured at 42, and the enclosure is formed with a laterally extending portion 44 forming a top wall of a discharge duct The. bottom wall 45 of the discharge duct is formed by sheet metal stamping having side flanges frictionally engaging the continuations of the flange 41 of the closure, this arrangement forming a discharge duct rectangular in cross section. The outer edge of the laterally extending portion 44 and the outer edge of the bottom member 45 are curved in diverging directions to form ridges 4-8 to aid in retaining dust collecting bag 5%) attached to the discharge duct as by a tape 51. The bag is also Supported by a tape 52 tied about the power supply cord 5'3. The cord 53 is attached to a handle 54 extending rearwardly from the upper portion of the motor housing 31 and in which there is mounted a control switch having a finger operated actuator 54 A knob 55 is also attached to the forward side 'of the motor housing.
The fan enclosure is positioned on the top wall 11 of the base with the open side downward and with the edge of the flange 41 positioned upon a gasket 56. .An annular member 57 is positioned between the fan enclosure and a circular shoulder formed at the lower portion of the fan housing 31, see Figure 5, the arrangement being such that when the screws 38 are tightened, the fan enclosure is clamped against the gasket 56. A motor cooling fan fitlis mounted on the motor shaft 30 withits hub extending through the aperture 42 formed in the fan enclosure and. abutting against the hub portion of a fan 63 also mounted o nthe motor shaft 30 and being positioned within the fan enclosure. The top wall of the base is formed with one or more apertures 64 located in close proximity to the bearing 66 mounted in the top wall of the base and in which the lower end of the motor shaft is rotatably journalled.
The base 10 is provided with a depending skirt encircling the pad 13, the lower edge of the skirt terminating in close proximity to the surface being sanded in order to provide for a more efiicient operation of the dust collecting system.
The pad is provided with means at each end for attaching the ends of a sheet 68 of abrasive material. As shown, this lindrical'to receive a spring member 70 which is attached to the plate 14 as by rivets 71 and which yieldingly moves the member 69 against the plate. The ends of the abrasive sheet 68 are inserted between the memtated to move or drag the ends of the sheet inwardly so that the sheet is drawn snugly across the face of the pad.
The skirt is movable upwardly to expose the sheet fastening members 69 so that the sheet may be conveniently changed. As shown, the skirt comprises a forward section 72 and a rear section 73. These sections are of general U formation and are arranged in confronting relation with their ends overlapping and being pivotally secured to the base, as by screws 79, whereby each of the sections is individually movable about the pivot screws 79 to expose the end portions of the pad 13, see Figure 3. The end walls of the skirt sections 72, 73, are indented as at 80, Figure 4, to form a detent for entrance into apertures 81 formed in each end of the base flange 12 and which serve'to maintain the skirt sections in down or operative position.
