Abstract

978,675. Centrifugal separators. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. June 7, 1963 [Aug. 6, 1962], No. 22750/63. Heading B2P. In a centrifuge for continuously partially removing liquid from a solid-liquid slurry, e.g. crushed coal in water, concentrate is discharged from a rotating bowl 48, Fig. 2, in a generally radial direction and impinges against a surface 96 of a rotatable collecting member 92 from which it is continuously removed by means of a plough 116, Fig. 4. The bowl drive shaft 5 1 is connected to a belt-driven pulley 75 and the shaft 72 of a screw conveyer 60 for moving the concentrate to discharge outlets 76 is driven from the bowl through gearing 74, at a speed different from that of the shaft 51. The bowl is mounted in a two-part casing 82 provided internally with baffles 84, 85, 87 which, co-operate with rings 86 on the bowl to prevent intermixing of the concentrate and liquid after they have been separated: The separated liquid is discharged from the bowl through one or more outlets 80 into a chamber 88 and passes into an outlet hopper 90. The collecting member 92 having a hub 97 supported in a bearing 99 is rotated at a speed much less than that of bowl 48 by means of a motor through gear 110 and chain 112. The plough 116, Fig. 3, which is stationary, is provided with. a bradset 118 clamped to the baffle 84 by means of plates 120 and screws 122 and is provided at its end adjacent the bradset with a downwardly directed baffle which directs the concentrate egressing through an opening 121 in the baffle 84, Fig. 4, into a discharge shoot 117. The coal slurry is pumped from a tank through a pipeline equipped with valves and a flowmeter to a hopper from which it is pumped through a supply conduit 68 and enters within the hub of the screw conveyer and escapes under centrifugal action through ports 77. The concentrate is conducted from the shoot 117 to a pulverizing mill and the pulverized coal is discharged to a fan which conveys it in a stream of heated air to a furnace.
