Abstract
911,990. Optical sights; optical adjusting apparatus. CIBIE, P. Oct. 13, 1960 [Oct. 30, 1959], No. 35141/60. Class 97 (1). An optical sight consists of several thin parallel opaque blades separated from one another by transparent gaps and arranged in a common support. As shown in Fig. 3, the opaque blades 5 are separated by gaps 6 and mounted in a support 7, one side 7a of which is fixed to a part 8, which is rotatable in a bush 9 on a supporting arm 10 so that it may occupy positions defined by a pin 11 slipped through holes in the part 8. The blades 6 may be of metal, glass or a synthetic substance and are preferably blackened to avoid parasitic reflections. The width of each gap and the length of each blade are preferably so chosen that the angle formed with the planes of the blades by the straight line joining two points which are sighted through one of the transparent gaps is equal to or less than the designed tolerance on the degree of parallelism between the planes of these blades and said straight line so that the straight line can be regarded as being parallel to the reference plane defined by one of the blades. The sight may be used for positioning an apparatus for adjusting vehicle head lamps. Thus, as shown in Fig. 6, the sight 12 is mounted by its arm 10 on a support 14 movable about a point 15 on an optical unit 13 which is carried by a stand 16 on a carriage 17. The axis of the optical unit is set parallel to the plane of the ground by using aiming sights (such as 18) placed on the ground near to the front and rear wheels of a vehicle 22. The sight is arranged with its blades perpendicular to the axis of the optical unit 13 and a mirror 23 reflects the image of the sights towards the sight 12. The complete assembly consisting of the optical unit and the optical sight is then displaced until the line of sight 4b is parallel to the sight blades. The axis of the optical unit is then positioned so that it is parallel to the line of travel of the vehicle. For this purpose the optical sight 12 is placed with its blades perpendicular to the axis of the optical unit 13 and aiming sights 25, Fig. 8, are placed on the head lamps 24 and the optical unit and the sight are displaced until the line of sight 4c passes through the tops of the two aiming sights. The aiming sights 25, as shown in Fig. 11, may each comprise a suction cap 28 for fixing the aiming sight to the head lamp, each suction cap being rigidly attached to a T-shaped supporting spheres 31, 32 of different diameters and contrasting colours.
