Abstract

949,104. Comparing profiles; recording apparatus. SECRETARY OF STATE, WAR DEPARTMENT. Nov. 2,1962 [Nov.3, 1961], No. 39409/61. Headings G1J and G1M. Apparatus for recording and comparing profiles comprises a feeler 21 movable round a standard or a workpiece 43. As the feeler moves in one co-ordinate direction rod 18,19 slides in members 22, 23 and drives a wheel 17 to rotate a cylinder 16. As the feeler moves in a perpendicular direction carriage 4, supporting cylinder 16, rod 19 and members 22, 23 slides on guides 11, 8, 9, thus moving cylinder 16 axially relative to a support 33, carrying an optical system and a scriber. Cylinder 16 is transparent but covered with a film of carbon. A scriber 37 is detachably mounted on a fixed support 33 and bears resiliently against cylinder 16 so that it can produce a trace of a standard profile 43 on the cylinder 16. An optical system (Fig. 3) comprising a light bulb 40a, a mirror 42, within the cylinder 16, a lens 46 and mirrors 47, 48 are provided so that the trace produced can be viewed on a screen 49, with a reference marking 50, mounted on the same support 33 as the scriber 37. If the scriber is removed and the feeler 21 again moved round the standard 43 the trace will move through the intersection of the reference marking 50. If a workpiece replaces the standard 43 and the feeler follows its outline any deviation of the trace from the intersection of marking 50 indicates deviation of the workpiece from standard. In alternative embodiments the cylinder 16 is coated with a reflecting material and an appropriate optical system provided. The axial movement of the cylinder relative to the optical system may be produced by moving the optical system rather than the cylinder. The cylinder may be replaced by a turntable. The trace produced on the cylinder or turntable need not be identical to the standard profile but is related thereto by the transmission characteristics of the apparatus.
