Abstract
1367767 Cutting by lasers DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 7 March 1972 [31 Dec 1970] 61968/70 Heading B3V [Also in Divisions B4-B5 and C1] An apparatus for machining oxide material 1 by a carbon dioxide-nitrogen-helium gas laser 9 comprises a mounting 3, 7 for the material 1, an optical system 13, 15, 17 for concentrating the laser radiation on the material 1 and means for controlling the position 19 of the concentrated laser radiation on the material 1. The workpiece may comprise silica, zirconia, alumina, magnesium aluminate spinel, magnesia, alumina porcelain, soda glass and soda-aluminaborosilicate glass. A workpiece of platinum, zinc or a photographic emulsion on a metal plate may also be machined by the laser if the workpiece contains an oxide layer. In one embodiment, a beam from the laser 9 is deflected on to a workpiece 1 by mirrors 13, 15, 17 mounted on a saddle 11 which is coupled to a lead screw 21. The workpiece 1 may be rotated in a chuck 3 and tailstock 7 whilst the saddle 11 is moved by the screw 21 so that the imping- ing laser beam 19 traces a helical path to form, for example, a helical groove in a silica, sintered zirconia or sintered magnesia workpiece. A groove may also be produced in an alumina and spinel workpiece if the area impinged by the laser beam 19 is subsequently abraded. Alternatively, a silica tube may be cut by the laser beam 19 to produce a helical spring. The laser beam may have a diameter of 0À5 or 2 mm. In another embodiment, an apparatus for reproducing a pattern on a workpiece 1 further includes a transparency 41 mounted on a transparent drum 39, which is rotated from the chuck 3 via belt 37 and pulleys 33, 35 and which is internally illuminated by a lamp mounted on an arm 43 attached to the saddle 11. The lines of the transparency 41 are detected by a photo-cell 47 connected by an arm 45 to the saddle 11, whereupon a shutter 23 is opened by a motor 25 to allow the laser beam to impinge on the workpiece 1. When the shutter 23 is closed, the laser beam is deflected into an absorber 27. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), a flat workpiece (85) is machined on a table (63) which is movable on a bed (61) by a lead screw (69) or a rack and pinion (71, 73). The mirrors 13, 15, 17 are mounted on a mounting (75) which is movable by a lead screw (81) at right angles to the table movement.
