Abstract

1507049 Testing vehicle wheel alignment DUNLOP Ltd 13 March 1975 [21 March 1974] 12512/74 Heading G1X The wheel alignment of a velicle is tested by means of apparatus comprising a pair of probes which engage the wheel or tyre in a horizontal plane, a member movable in a horizontal plane relative to at least one of the probes from a first position where it is parallel to an imaginary line drawn between the probe tips and a second position where it is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, optical alignment means including a plane mirror which, in use, is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis to allow accurate location of the member in the second position, and means which indicates the amount of movement between the two positions. In one embodiment, as shown, the member 101 is moved by altering the distance between the tip of probe 106 from the member 101, the probe 106 having an externally screw threaded portion 117 which engages with an internally screw threaded collar 116. A transparent scale plate 122 carried by brackets 120, 121, in conjunction with a line 126 on a barrel portion 125 of the probe 106 allows the transverse distance moved through to be determined. The distance between the probes 104, 106 may be adjusted to accommodate different wheel or tyre sizes. Two coplaner mirrors 202, 203 may be provided which are adjusted to a vertical plane by leg 207, pivotal probes being mounted on the mirror assembly so as to define vehicle abutment surfaces and thereby effect correct orientation of the mirror assembly. In an alternative embodiment, the member is movable between the two positions by rotation about a pivotal mounting which is fixed in relation . to the probe tips, a scale being provided to enable the angle turned through to be determined. The mirror may be double sided and provided with a horizontal sight tube having hair lines along its length to align with plumb bobs draped over corresponding parts of the vehicle in order to position the mirror perpendicularly to the horizontal axis of the vehicle. In an alternative mirror construction, two vertical and coplaner mirrors are employed which are mounted to pivot about a vertical axis to allow the desired orientation thereof to be attained. The various mirror and gauge embodiments may be interchanged.
