Abstract

Sighting devices for use in adjusting railway signal lamps are provided with machined supports which co-operate with finished surfaces on the lamp casing, to ensure parallelism between the line of sight and the beam emitted by the signal unit. ' The device described comprises a sighting tube 25 with a sight aperture 28 and a glass disc 29 provided with cross-wires, opaque crossed lines, or an opaque ring, which may be produced by sand-blasting, leaving transparent central and marginal portions. The supports 26, 27 are machined and co-operate with the machined surfaces of projections 31 on the lamp casing, support 26 fitting over a pin 32, and support 27 being bifurcated so that support is effected at three points. The device is detachably held in place, as by a spring 33 engaging the staple 34. The parts are standardized so that any sighting device may be used with any lamp and will be parallel to the light beam. To this end the levers 18, 19 may be carried by a ring 20 with machined surfaces co-operating with machined surfaces in the casing, and each lamp bulb 21 is made so that the filaments will be at a predetermined position in the system when the bulb is in place. The lamp casing has a groove &c. adapted to embrace the upright arm 8<a> of a lamp support 8, which is also provided with a projection 8<b> embraced by projection 14 on the casing. Support 8 is secured on a bracket 6 by bolts 9, 10, bolt 10 passing through a slot to allow angular adjustment about bolt 9 as a pivot. The bracket 6 is secured to a member 2 by bolts 4, 5 allowing angular adjustment, member 2 being clamped to the post 1.
