Abstract
Mellitic acid is made by heating together in aqueous alkaline solution in a pressure-resistant vessel tetrachlorophthalic acid, or its anhydride, or tetrachloroterephthalic acid, an alkali metal cyanide and copper cyanide, together with a catalyst comprising either an oxide or salt of iron, copper or chromium or a mixture thereof or a complex heavy metal cyanide salt, and recovering the mellitic acid formed. The alkali cyanide may be sodium cyanide, potassium cyanide or sodium potassium cyanide. Suitable catalysts are ferric oxide, ferrosyl hydroxide, ferrous hydroxide, the sulphates, chlorides and nitrates of iron, copper or chromium, or Berlin blue salt, potassium ferriferrohexacyanide. Addition of 0.5 to 5% of oxides or hydroxides of iron copper or chromium to the cyanide complex gives a further increased yield. The reaction takes place in the range 160 DEG to 260 DEG C. after between 4 and 15 hours, the pressure generally being from 25 to 100 atm. due to the evolution of ammonia. The catalyst may be recirculated in the process.
