Abstract
911,315. Valves. SANGAMO WESTON Ltd. Jan. 23, 1961 [Jan. 21, 1960], No. 2273/60. Class 135. A float-operated needle valve 18 controlling the supply of liquid to a chamber 10, e.g. for supplying fuel oil through an outlet pipe 12 to oil burning equipment, is normally opened and closed in response to movement of the float 13 to maintain a level " l " in the chamber, and in the event of the float or level sinking below a predetermined limit, e.g. owing to puncturing of the float, the valve is closed by a supplementary closing means released by a trip mechanism operated by the float. The supplementary closing means may also be tripped on rising of the float above a predetermined limit to supplement the normal closing action of the float and ensure complete shut off. As shown, in normal operation an extension 16 of the float arm 14 beyond its fulcrum 15 bears on the underside of a weight 17 fixed to the needle valve 18. On falling of the float below a predetermined limit, a projecting tooth 40 formed on the fulcrum region of the arm 14 engages an inturned catch lug 37 on a short limb 36 of a lever arm 35 pivoted at 32. A long limb 38 of arm 35 consequently engages an abutment surface 41 of a slot in an outwardly-turned lug 39 on one of two side arms 22 of a release lever 21 which is freely pivoted on the fulcrum 15 and has an extension 24 carrying a latch 25 which engages a notch 26 on the free end of an extension arm 27 of a hammer device 28 also pivoted at 32. This hammer device is loaded by a spring 33 and carries a striker 30 adapted to contact the end 34 of the valve 18 to overcome the weight of the float 13 and close the valve. On rising of the float above another predetermined limit, the arm 14 engages a platform 23 connecting the side arms 22 to disengage the latch 25 and apply closing force to the valve to supplement the buoyancy of the float and ensure complete closure. The spring hammer 28 may be replaced by a gravity operated device. The outlet pipe 12 is set at a level which prevents operation of the trip simply by drawing-off fuel.
