Abstract
The pilling resistance, dimensional stability and body of fibrous materials are improved by treating them with a single-phase liquid solution comprising a liquid medium and an inert extender and a latent solvent for the fibres which are soluble in or miscible with the liquid medium, insolubilizing the inert extender on the surface of the fibres, thereby converting the system to a plurality of phases, activating the latent solvent on the fibres sufficiently to point-bond the fibres at a number of point sites and removing all the remaining components of the liquid solution from the fibrous materials. Staple fibres, monofilaments, tow, sliver, yarns, woven knitted and non-woven fabrics, including pile fabrics, made from polyamides, polyesters, polyacrylonitrile and copolymers of acrylonitrile with vinylacetate, vinyl chloride, methyl acrylate and vinyl pyridine, acrylonitrile/methyl acrylate/sodium styrene sulphonate terpolymers, vinyl and vinylidine polymers and copolymers, polycarbonates, polyurethanes, polyester-amides, polyethylenes, polypropylenes, fluorinated ethylene polymers, cellulose, di- and tri-acetates, viscose rayon, wool, cotton and silk may be treated. Suitable latent fibre solvents are sodium, lithium, calcium, potassium and magnesium thiocyanates, lithium, sodium, cadmium and cobaltous iodides, calcium, lithium and ferrous bromides, zinc, cupric, ferric, magnesium and barium chlorides, ethylene and propylene carbonates, dimethyl sulphone, tetramethylene sulphone, dimethyl formamide and acetamide, gamma-butyrolactone, trimethylene carbonate, nitric, formic, benzoic, dichloroacetic, trichloroacetic and trifluoroacetic acids, phenol, m-cresol, benzyl alcohol, dichlorophenol, alkali metal salts of thioglycolic acid and sodium sulphide. The liquid medium may be water, ethylene glycol, benzene, ethanol or methanol. The inert extender, which may be polyethylene oxide, polydioxolane, a polyalkylene glycol, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium or potassium alginate, methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic or polymethacrylic acid, the sodium salt of polyacrylic acid or sodium oleate, may be insolubilized by heating in the case of compounds having inverse solubility, by heating to evaporate the liquid medium, by adding salts or precipitating ions to cause precipitation, by concentrating salts within the solution to effect precipitation of the extender or by adding acid or alkali to change the pH. The treating composition may also contain softeners and antistatic and lubricating agents. Before or after the bonding treatment the fibrous materials may be subjected to a mechanical finishing treatment, e.g. napping, brushing, teasling, shearing, fulling, semi-decatising, scouring, palmering, rotary pressing and calendering. Specifications 436,925, 685,623, 798,546, 799,456, 801,724 and 869,301 are referred to.
