Abstract

Three-dimensional undulating patterns on fabrics containing nylon yarns are produced by treating selected areas of the fabric with an aqueous solution containing not less than 30 per cent. by weight of a halogen-substituted aliphatic monocarboxylic acid until the treated areas shrink and display undulations, and then removing excess acid as by washing, neutralisation or other means. The acid solution may be applied directly, as by printing, to the selected areas, or alternatively a resist, e.g. the sodium salt of styrene-maleic acid mixed polymer, may first be printed on the fabric and the acid then applied as an all-over treatment. Specified acids are monochloro-, dichloro- and trichloro-acetic; bromoacetic; alpha- and beta-chloropropionic and alpha- and betabromopropionic acids. To the acid solution starches, dextrines, gums, clay, talc, finely - divided minerals, dyestuffs and pigments may be added. The acid treatment increases the affinity of the fabric for direct, acid, acetate, basic and vat dyestuffs. Numerous Examples are given.ALSO:In the production of three-dimensional undulating patterns on fabric containing nylon yarns by treatment of selected areas of the fabric with an aqueous solution containing not less than 30 per cent by weight of a halogen-substituted aliphatic monocarboxylic acid (see Group IV(a)), the treatment also increases the affinity of the fibres for direct, acid, acetate, basic and vat dyestuffs. Specified acids are monochloro-, dichloro-, and trichloroacetic; bromoacetic; alpha- and beta-chloro- and -bromo-propionic acids. Dyestuffs may be added to the acid solution or may be subsequently applied. In addition, dyestuffs may be locally applied prior to the local application of the acid. Thus in example 22, the fabric is dyed with a dischargeable dye and then printed in turn with (a) a paste containing sodium sulphoxylate formaldehyde solution as a colour discharging agent, together with a resist, viz.: the sodium salt of polymerized styrenemaleic acid, for the acid; (b) a paste containing the colour discharging agent and resist of (a) together with a mixture of vat dyes; and (c) a paste containing the colour discharging agent and resist of (a) together with a further vat dye, the printed fabric being subsequently printed with a thickened solution of monochloroacetic acid.
