Abstract

28,174. Bucher, C. Dec. 20. Dyeing.-Consists in a method of colouring fabrics made of animal fibres, such as wool, by a printing process, whereby the appearance of mixed or sprinkled fabrics, made from fancy or multicoloured yarns, is imparted to them. The desired indefinite patterns are first printed on the fabric, using caustic alkali, such as potash, soda, or ammonia, mixed with glycerine, and a thickener, such as gum or gurafin, that is a purified natural gum rendered soluble, made from so called insoluble natural gum, or traganton, that is Persian tragacanth. The fabrics, either wet or dry, are then placed in a fixing-bath, which may consist of a solution of a salt such as tin chloride, tin oxalate, aluminium acetate, or zinc sulphate, the mordant increasing the affinity of the fibre for the dye, and preventing any deleterious action on the part of the alkali, as well as facilitating its removal. The fabric is then washed in water and dyed, preferably using mordanted alizarine dyes or substantive diamine colours. The fixing-bath may, in certain cases, be used preparatory to or before printing with alkali, whilst the power of absorbing dye is further increased by precipitating a metallic hydroxide, such as tin hydroxide, on the spots imprinted with alkali. Special effects may be obtained by adding other dyes to the dye-bath which colour the unmordanted and mordanted parts uniformly.
