Abstract

552,015. Treating nylon. COURTAULDS, Ltd., WHITTAKER, C. M., THOMAS, H. A., and WILCOCK, C. C. Aug. 15, 1941, No. 10383. [Classes 2 (ii), 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Nylon is made resistant to dyeing with direct cotton dyes by a treatment in acidified aqueous solution with a compound (other than free sulphanilic acid) containing one or more sulphonic acid groups ( #CÀSO 3 H or-OÀSO 3 H). Such compound may be in the form of the free acid or of a water-soluble alkali salt and the treatment may be effected before or during the dyeing operation. Specified compounds are 1:8:3:6 - aminonaphtholdisulphonic acid, 2:6 - naphtholsulphonic acid, naphthalene-2-sulphonic acid, sulphonated lauryl alcohol, sulphonated castor oil, Prestabit oil and the products sold under the Registered Trade Marks "Calsolene" oil HS, " Nekal BX " and " Lissapol LS." In examples (1) to (7), nylon yarn is (1) treated for ¢ hour with an aqueous solution at 90 ‹C. containing formic acid and 1:8:3:6-aminonaphtholdisulphonic acid/and rinsed; the treated yarn is only slightly stained when treated for 1 hour in an aqueous solution at 90 ‹C. containing Diphenyl M2B and acetic acid; (2) and (3) treated for 1 hour with an aqueous solution at 90 ‹C. containing Diphenyl blue M2B, acetic acid and (2) 2:6-naphtholsulphonic acid, (3) naphthalene-2-sulphonic acid, to obtain a slightly tinted yarn ; (4) treated for 1 hour with an aqueous solution at 90 ‹C. containing Chlorazol fast orange AG, acetic acid and sulphonated lauryl alcohol to obtain a slightly tinted yarn ; (5) treated for 1 hour with an aqueous solution at 90‹C. containing Solar orange,RGL, acetic acid and "Lissapol LS" to obtain a slightly tinted yarn ; (6) treated for 1 hour with an aqueous solution at 90‹C. containing Paramine black BH, acetic acid and "Calsolene" oil HS to obtain a slightly tinted yarn; (7) treated for.1 hour with an aqueous solution at 90‹C. containing Chlorazol fast scarlet 8BS, acetic acid and "Nekal BX" to obtain a light pink yarn. In Example (8) a nylon fabric is printed with an aqueous preparation containing " Calsolene " oil HS and " Manucol" (Registered Trade Mark), dried, steamed and dyed by treatment for 1 hour in an aqueous solution at 95 ‹C. containing Paramine black BH and acetic acid to obtain a two-tone pattern with the printed areas of lighter shade. Specifications 461,236 and 461,237 are referred to.
