Abstract

An acid leuco vat dye is prepared by reducing a vat dye with thiourea dioxide in the presence of alkali and then acidifying. An excess of thiourea dioxide over the alkali may be employed, and the acidification may take place in the presence of a colloid or dispersing agent. The acid leuco vat is used for dyeing or printing protein or synthetic linear polyamide fibres. In Examples (1) Ciba Brown G Micropaste is reduced with thiourea dioxide in the presence of caustic soda and thiodiglycol, poured into a solution containing British gum, acetic acid, thiourea dioxide and a dispersing agent, and padded on to a wool taffeta which is then dried, steamed, and oxidized with hydrogen peroxide; (2) chlorinated wool taffeta is printed with a paste containing the acid leuco Caledon Jade Green XN prepared as in (1); (3) silk is printed with a paste containing the acid leuco Ciba Brown BB Micropaste prepared by reducing the dye with thiourea dioxide in the presence of caustic soda and polyethylene glycol and pouring into a solution containing tragacanth, acetic acid, thiourea dioxide and a dispersing agent; and (4) a nylon fabric is padded with an acid leuco vat prepared by reducing Indanthrene Brilliant Scarlet RK with thiourea dioxide in the presence of caustic soda and a dispersing agent and then pouring the solution into a paste containing acetic acid, thiourea dioxide and British gum.
