Abstract

Fibres of protein or synthetic linear superpolyamides are dyed by applying a composition comprising thiourea dioxide and an indigo, thioindigo or naphthalene-quinone indigo vat dye, subjecting the fibres to a temperature of approximately 100 DEG C under acid or neutral conditions to reduce the dye to its leuco form, and then oxidizing the leuco dye. The composition may also contain a swelling agent or softener for the fibres. The composition may be padded or printed on to the material. In Examples, (1) chlorinated wool taffeta is padded with a thickened composition containing Durindone Printing Blue 4BCS, thiourea dioxide, Glydote B and Dispersol AC (Glydote and Dispersol are Registered Trade Marks), dried, steamed at 99 to 100 DEG C and oxidized with hydrogen peroxide and ammonia; (2) the same material is printed with a similar composition but using Durindone Printing Scarlet YS; (3) the same material is printed with a thickened composition containing Durindone Printing Red 3BS, thiourea dioxide, polyethylene glycol and Dispersol AC and finished as before; (4) silk is printed with a paste containing Ciba Violet 6R, thiourea dioxide, polyethylene glycol and Dispersol AC, steamed, and oxidized with sodium percarbonate solution; and (5) nylon fabric is printed with a similar paste.
