Abstract
Lubricating oil is hydrofined and desulphurized in the presence of a catalyst comprising a free or combined oxide of a commercially available metal of Group VI and/or VIII of the Periodic Table supported on an oxide of an element of Groups II, III or IV which has been pre-treated in the presence of hydrogen with a petroleum distillate rich in sulphur, suitably at 360 DEG -420 DEG C. with an illuminating or gas oil containing 0,1-2% of total sulphur. The preferred catalyst comprises molybdenum and cobalt oxides, free or combined, deposited on an alumina and/or magnesia support, and the hydrofining treatment is preferably carried out at 250 DEG -360 DEG C. with a limited or substantial removal of sulphur as desired; a nickel tungstate catalyst supported on alumina/silica may also be used.
