Abstract
Lubricating oils from petroleum feedstock are refined by contacting at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of hydrogen with a catalyst comprising the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum (as such or in combined form), supported on a base consisting of one or more oxides of a metal from the upper half of Group II (i.e. Be, Mg, Ca or 2n). The support referred to is magnesium oxide. The hydrofining may be carried out at a temperature of 300-800 DEG F., a pressure of 50-800 p.s.i.g., a space velocity of 0.5-15 v./v./hr. and a gas recycle rate of 500-2000 SCF/B. The lubricating oils, for example bright stock, may first be solvent extracted and dewaxed.
