Abstract

A process for the preparation of a lubricating oil fraction or fractions having a high viscosity index by hydrocracking of hydrocarbon oil having a boiling range at least partly above the final boiling point of lubricating oil comprises contacting the oil, in a first reaction zone and in the presence of hydrogen or a hydrogen-containing gas, at a temperature of between 250 DEG and 475 DEG C., a liquid hourly space velocity of from 0.4 to 5 litres of oil per hour per litre of catalyst, a pressure of from 50 to 500 atmospheres and an oil to hydrogen ratio of from 250 to 5,000 N litres of hydrogen per kilogram of oil, with a catalyst containing a hydrogenation component and an acid-acting cracking component, this contacting being carried out under such conditions that the percentage by weight of hydrocarbons having a boiling range of between 370 DEG and 525 DEG C. in the hydrocarbon mixture leaving the first reaction zone is at least 5 and at most 50 higher than the percentage by weight of the corresponding hydrocarbons in the hydrocarbon oil introduced into the first reaction zone; subsequently separating a hydrogen-containing gas and at least one hydrocarbon fraction having a final boiling point of between 370 DEG and 525 DEG C. from the reaction product; contacting at least part of the remaining reaction product, likewise in the presence of hydrogen or a hydrogen-containing gas, in a second reaction zone and at a temperature of from 325 DEG to 450 DEG C., a liquid hourly space velocity of from 0.2 to 5 litres of oil per hour per litre of catalyst, a pressure of from 50 to 500 atmospheres and a hydrogen to oil ratio of from 250 to 5,000 N litres of hydrogen per kilogram of oil, with a catalyst likewise containing a hydrogenation component and an acid-acting cracking component, this contacting being carried out under such conditions that the reaction mixture, when leaving the second reaction zone after the separation of normally gaseous components, contains 20 to 75% by weight of hydrocarbons having boiling points above 525 DEG C; and separating at least one lubricating oil fraction having a boiling range of between 370 DEG and 525 DEG C. from the reaction mixture of the second reaction zone. The feed stock may be pretreated to reduce the content of nitrogen compounds and carbonaceous components with sulphuric acid or by hydrogenation. Sulphur compounds such as hydrogen sulphide may be added to the feedstock in the first and/or second reaction zone. The catalyst in both zones may comprise cobalt, nickel, tungsten, molybdenum, platinum, palladium, copper and/or silver and/or the sulphides and/or oxides thereof supported on silica, alumina, magnesia, zirconia, titania and/or boria and may also contain a small amount of fluorine. An example describes the preparation of lubricating oil from a residual oil.
