Abstract

A process for the production of lubricating oil comprises deasphalting a crude lubricating oil stock containing (a) at least 2% by volume of asphaltic materials, (b) at least 10% by volume of residual components boiling above 538 C., and (c) components boiling in the range from 316 to 538 C. and hydrotreating the deasphalted lubricating oil stock. A suitable feedstock is a 399 C. + bottoms fraction from an atmospheric tower. The deasphalting may be a conventional solvent deasphalting. The catalyst for the hydrotreating step may be a combination of nickel, cobalt and molybdenum or nickel and tungsten on a carrier such as alumina or silica-alumina. It may be promoted with a halogen such as fluorine.
