Abstract
1,132,677. Hydrofinishing. GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. 8 March, 1967 [11 March, 1966(2)], No. 10988/67. Heading C5E. A process for the production of a lubricating oil from a lubricating oil base stock containing at least 0À75 per cent sulphur comprises subjecting the base stock to hydrofinishing by contacting it with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst under hydrogenation conditions of temperature, pressure and space velocity and then subjecting the hydrofinished base stock to a solvent dewaxing treatment. The hydrogenation catalyst may be a Group VI or Group VIII metal or its oxide or sulphide, alone or on a carrier; examples are Ni, Co, and Mo on alumina and Ni and W on alumina. Up to 5% silica may be included. The dewaxing solvent may be a mixture of toluene and methyl ethyl ketone.
