Abstract

1,218,920. Hydrorefining - hydrocracking. CHEVRON RESEARCH CO. 26 Sept., 1969, No. 47596/69. Heading C5E. The pour point of oils containing aromatics and organic nitrogen compounds is reduced by: (a) catalytically reacting with hydrogen at 650-900‹ F. and 1000-5000 p.s.i.g. to remove organic nitrogen and organic sulphur compounds and removing the H 2 S and NH 3 formed; (b) reducing the aromatics content to less than 1 wt. per cent by reaction with hydrogen using a catalyst of 0À1-10 wt. per cent Ni, Pt or Pd on alumina or silica-alumina at 200-650‹ F. and 1000-5000 p.s.i.g.; and (c) hydrocracking and hydroisomerizing the oil using a catalyst of Ni, Pt or Pd on silica-alumina containing up to 2 wt. per cent chloride or fluoride at 750- 900‹ F. and 500-5000 p.s.i.g. The product oil can be treated with sulphuric acid or clay or by hydrogenation at below 650‹ F. using a catalyst of 2% Pd on silica-alumina and can be separated into 140 neutral, 400 neutral and brightstock fractions. Aromatics can be added to the product oil. The catalyst used in step (a) is suitably of nickel or cobalt together with molybdenum or tungsten, as the sulphides, on a support of alumina, mixtures of alumina with silica, magnesia, zirconia and titonia, or silicamagnesia. Suitable feeds are vacuum gas oils and residual oils solvent deasphalted by propane, butane or pentane.
