Abstract
Petroleum oils containing ash-forming constituents are desulphurized by heating the oil to 700-850 DEG F. to vaporize at least a substantial portion of the oil, contacting it in a first catalytic zone with 2-40 moles/mole of oil of hydrogen and an adsorptive catalyst consisting of activated charcoal or silica-alumina, at a pressure of 0-500 p.s.i.g. and a feed rate of 0.5-20 v.v./hr., and contacting the effluent from this zone in a second zone with a sulphur-active hydrogenation catalyst at 700-850 DEG F., 0-500 p.s.i.g. pressure and a feed rate of 0.2-10 v.v./hr. The adsorptive catalyst may be a spent silica-alumina catalyst which has been used in a cracking process. Sulphur-active hydrogenation catalysts referred to are the oxides and sulphides of V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Mo and Ws, used alone or mixed with alumina, magnesia, silica or zinc oxide; catalysts specified are cobalt molybdate on alumina, mixed nickel and tungsten sulphides, cobalt sulphide on alumina, molybdenum oxide on alumina, nickel sulphide on alumina and tin sulphide on alumina. The catalysts in both zones may be in the form of fixed or fluidized beds. Petroleum oils referred to are crude oil, crude oil fractions and reduced crudes, especially deasphalted oils from crude residuum.
